Stroke Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing: Why They’re Important
Stroke is the second-leading cause of death and the primary global cause of disability. According to the Global Stroke Factsheet published in 2022, the lifetime risk of having a stroke has climbed by 50% in the last 17 years, with 1 in 4 people now thought to experience one. Only a small percentage of patients with acute stroke receive thrombolytic therapy, and many of them continue to have functional deficits even after receiving treatment, despite the creation of stroke center designation and improved mechanisms to diagnose stroke symptoms and provide care promptly. So, for the foreseeable future, successful stroke rehabilitation will probably still be a crucial component of the continuum of stroke care.
In some cases, a patient is ready to leave the hospital but still needs to receive some kind of ongoing medical treatment. A rehabilitation center or a skilled nursing facility are the two common places people go after leaving the hospital.
Rehabilitation programs are essential for assisting patients in regaining lost abilities, learning new skills, and working toward independence after a stroke. Everyone experiences recovery after a stroke differently; it may take weeks, months, or even years. While some people fully recover, others have long-term or permanent disability.
After a hospital stay, a skilled nursing facility may be suggested if it’s judged that a patient needs additional long-term care for their condition to recover. Custodial care is a part of skilled nursing, so patients can have assistance with getting out of bed, eating, showering, and using the restroom. When compared to short-term rehab, skilled nursing devotes less time to physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and therapy sessions aren’t as intense.
